Guadeloupe Buses, Taxis and Car Rentals

Taxis
Taxis are easy to find, there are taxi stations at the airport and most hotels, however, and they are notoriously expensive!  They increase their fares at night and on weekends, and some choose not to have a meter, so be sure of the cost up front.

It’s a good idea to bring your French translator if you do not know the language; the drivers will mostly be speaking French.

Buses
If you are not in a hurry, Guadeloupe has buses that run all over the islands.  They are not always on time, and they make a lot of stops, but they are the most economical (and eco-friendly!) form of transportation here, and they are widely know for just being fun!

There are regular bus stops, but you can also get them to stop in between by waving them down (also true for getting off the bus!). Again, the drivers will be speaking French, so bring your phrasebook, sit back, and enjoy the beautiful sights!

Tour buses are also available, information will be at your hotel concierge of front desk.

Car Rentals
Since Guadeloupe is a French possession, cars are driven on the right side of the road (whew!).  Roads are, in most places, well-paved, although caution should be exercised when driving in Guadeloupe, as local drivers drive fast, turns creep up, and there are sometimes long distances between gas stations.  If you want to see all that Guadeloupe has to offer, a car is the best way to go, since the buses don’t go to all of the out-of-the-way spots that you must not miss!  You will need an international driver’s license.
