Clothing
Dress is casual, formal attire is not usually required by restaurants or nightclubs. Have fun with what you wear, but please keep in mind that this is not strictly a tourist destination, and the locals appreciate beachwear being saved for the beaches and swimming pools. Topless sunbathing is accepted in some areas, be sure to ask before disrobing, or simply take a cue from others.
Electricity
Guadeloupe power is 220AC V 50Hz with European outlets.
Language
French is the official language of Guadeloupe, with Creole being the traditional second language. Although you will often find English-speaking locals happy to assist in the more tourist-designed areas, it is a good idea to bring a French translator or phrase book.
Medical facilities
Guadeloupe has five hospitals and dozens of medical clinics. While finding an English-speaking doctor may be a challenge, the tourist Office or your hotel may be able to assist with that. Pharmacies are fully stocked with French supplies. Vaccinations are not required unless traveling from an endemic area.
Money
The official currency of Guadeloupe is the Euro. Recent exchange rate was $1 = .68E
Passports & Immigration
Valid passports and return tickets are required. Trips completed within three months do not require a visa.
Personal Safety
Swimming in fresh water such as lakes and rivers is not recommended due to the parasite Bilharziosis. Check with locals before eating any freshly-caught fish as some ingest a seaweed that can be toxic to humans. Avoid touching the Manchineel tree, its sap is highly poisonous (trees are often marked). Wear sunscreen!
Pets
Pets must be micro chipped or tattooed and have veterinary certificates of vaccinations and good health. Overall, Guadeloupe is very pet-friendly and there are a variety of hotels that will allow them to accompany you.
Telephones
There are public phones scattered throughout the islands, they are almost all credit card operated, very few (if any) still take coins. Calling cards will often save you money on calls.
Time zone: Atlantic Standard Time (EST + 1 hour, or GMT - 4 hours)
Tipping/Gratuities
Tipping is not expected, but is always appreciated. Check your bills before tipping, hotels and restaurants usually automatically included 10-15%. Of course, you can always add to that, and if service anywhere is good, it is nice to acknowledge it, especially if you plan to use the service again!
Tourist Office
The Guadeloupe Tourist Office is a great resource once you arrive for any questions or concerns you may have or if you are just in need of suggestions! It is located at 5 Square de la Banque, B.P. 1099,97181 Cedex in Pointe-a-Pitre. Their telephone number is 590-82-09-30.
